How did I become a UX designer?
How did I become a UX designer?
How did I become a UX designer?
I have started my journey back in 2012 as a Graphic Designer.
From the very beginning I was inclined towards technology. So my interest was obvious to design for digital devices. But I started designing logos & identities and branding for that matter as It was my initial phase & I was getting that genre of work only. But my real interest was to design for web & mobile at that time.
So I started exploring and tried learning how to design a website & a mobile app. At this point it was already 2015. I was doing freelancing for people around the world and it taught me a lot. Everything was ok but there was something missing that I couldn’t figure at the time.
It is 2017 now but I was not fully satisfied with my process. I was not even fully aware of the technicalities and terminologies used in web design. It was also the time UI/UX industry was booming. The startups from India were getting big and taking over the world. There was a demand for UI/UX professionals.
I was aware of the term UI & UX but didn’t know how does that works & how to get into this thing for that matter. It was the time I took a challenge & decided that I want to be a UI designer whatever it takes.
I started exploring like a curious kid. Started watching YT videos & tutorials. I searched & explored design professionals on social media including LinkedIn. Connected with them even DM’d them my curious questions in cold blood :P
Some replied some didn’t….
I Even thought to get into a UI/UX design program but my time & money didn’t allow it. I got demotivated…. but I put myself together and decided to self taught myself. I watched & read a lot of videos & articles & books of course. I attended webinars and seminars. I was now confident till a certain degree. At this time I decided to face anything to get into UI/UX even if I had to quit my earnings and get into an internship, like I said WHATEVER IT TAKES.
The year 2019 brought me an opportunity in form of an internship at company and I didn’t think twice. I applied, faced the questions, cleared the interview and got the job. FINALLY. I was above the clouds.
The journey from then till now taught me a lot and I am what I am today because of all those times. Today I am working as a Senior UX Designer at HCL Technologies. I am also a part time mentor at Designerrs Academy & MyCaptain and it gives me pleasure to help budding designers achieve their goals.
It is a wonderful experience and I am enjoying every bit of what I do as a designer.
Thanks to everything that came in my way & made me what I am today. I wish luck & passion to all the aspirants out there who are trying to make it. Be strong, be decisive, take risks and last but not the least….Be curious.
Good Luck!
